Pruning

Reasons for pruning

There are a number of reasons for pruning shrubs and trees, which vary according to the plant. All plants including trees should be pruned at the correct time of year in line with the individual plant, using professional pruning techniques.

Poorly pruned plants will result in the weakening of the entire plant leaving it open to pest and disease attack. Badly pruned plants tend to grow unfavourably which leads to the need for additional pruning on a more regular basis, which results in the loss of flowers and berries and an unsightly plant.

Newly planted trees and shrubs
To establish a framework for attractive and productive growth, to produce maximum future cropping capacity and to create a desirable ‘shape’.

Fruit
To maintain tree shape to which it has been trained.
To encourage maximum cropping and regular fruiting.

Hedges
To keep the hedge to the required height and width.
To ensure the hedge remains dense as an effective barrier

Shrubs
To maintain the size and shape and spread required.
To encourage flowering or the display of attractive fruit, stem and foliage.
To prevent the spread of infection.
To restore shape and vitality.

Trees
To allow more light in or to maintain or create topiary.
Damage repair caused by weather conditions.
To remove dead or diseased branches

Lawn Care

Lawn Care
The best way to ensure a healthy lawn is to use correct mowing techniques. Correct mowing technique ensures the grass remains healthy, helps conserve water during dry spells, encourages healthier roots and discourages weeds and moss.

Mowing using incorrect techniques or cutting too short does not stop the lawn from growing as quickly, in fact it promotes the spread of moss, disease and weed growth. Leading to a demanding lawn requiring more attention

Lawn problems
Moss on the lawn can be a result of cutting too short, drought or waterlogging, on newly laid lawns may be due to poor site preparation, on established lawns poor grass vigour, acidic soil conditions, a lack of nutrients, compaction, poor drainage, shade, close mowing and over-use are likely to blame.
